Brass Mouthpieces
Mouthpieces for brass instruments consist of a rim, cup, throat and back bore, and come in a large variety of these various combinations. Because everybody has a different lip and teeth formation, it is important to select a mouthpiece suited to the individual and their respective playing requirements.

Wide - Increases Endurance.
Narrow - Improves Flexibility & Range.
Rounded - Improves Comfort.
Sharp - Increases Brilliance & Precision
of Attack.
Large - Increases Volume
& Control.
Small - Relieves
Fatigue & Weakness.
Deep - Darkens Tone (Esp.
in low register).
Shallow
- Brightens Tone (Esp. in high register).
A wide throat increases blowing freedom (less resistance) along with volume and tone and can sharpen the upper register.
A narrow throat increases resistance for better endurance and brilliance and flattens the upper register.
The back bores vary in both size and taper and depending on the combination, make the tone darker or brighter. They can also raise or lower the pitch in one or more registers and increase or decrease volume. In each case however the result somewhat depends on the combination of throat and cup sizes also.
